Question: Why would you suggest timber over steel, or steel over timber for a pergola.?

I wanted to know what is best for making a pergola or an outdoor student shelter in a school. i need it for a school research task, and primary source's would help my research. thanks!

I am a fan of wood, as a wood craftsman, wood allows unlimited ideas, shaping of wood, designs basically easier to work with. both metal and wood will need maintenance over time, wood maybe more. wood is more comfortable, soothing and warming. steel is steel, you would need to either to hire a fabricator or buy something premade and assemble. wood should be cheaper than steel

Don't build it out of steel - steel attracts lightening . Sure you can ground the steel building -- but when inside and lightening is in the area it might singe your hair. Wood is a natural weather insulator -- steel in the summertime will make you think you are in an oven.
